We are happy to announce Dan McNeish form Arizona State University will be the speaker for this TESC Colloquium on Tuesday April 14th.
He will give a presentation entitled: “Within-Person Reliability with Messy Data”
Abstract:
The importance of measurement and psychometrics in intensive longitudinal data is beginning to be recognized. New methods to quantify within-person reliability have been developed to help understand if momentary fluctuations are due to actual within-person changes in the intended construct or merely due to measurement error. Given the nascency of these methods, they have emphasized relatively clean data such as continuous outcomes or assume that any missing data is missing at random (MAR). However, intensive longitudinal data often have categorical responses like Likert scales to facilitate quick responses from participants, so methods intended for continuous data may attenuate estimates of within-person reliability. Additionally, the dense and frequent nature of data collection in ILD often leads to copious amounts of missing data (30-40% based on recent reviews). Missing intensive longitudinal data also tend to differ from traditional longitudinal studies because there are more frequently intermittent (i.e., people return after a missing value, unlike panel data were missingness is mostly dropout) and intensive longitudinal data are frequently missing not at random (MNAR) given that they are used to study sensitive topics (e.g., mental health) and responses may be missing for reasons related to what the response would have been. This talk discusses extensions within one framework for within-person reliability (measurement error autoregressive models) to accommodate nuances of categorical responses and missing data. Empirical examples and simulations are provided to clarify the nature of the issue and the potential effectiveness of the proposed methods.
