Attitudes towards the use of wearables in health care (e.g. cardiac patients)
The use of wearable health technology is becoming a feasible solution for the remote monitoring of patients with various medical conditions. The accurate and passive collection of data provides opportunities for the early detection of health abnormalities, individualized health interventions and overall better disease management. Despite these promises, the use of wearable health technology also comes with various psychological and ethical challenges that need to be solved to ensure successful integration into current healthcare.
In this colloquium, Marijn Eversdijk will present his work on the BECA project, which aims to develop a smartwatch to autonomously detect a sudden cardiac arrest and subsequently alert emergency services. He will present his quantitative work regarding sociodemographic and psychological associations related to user willingness within the general population, qualitative interviews on preferences and needs of various stakeholder groups (e.g., patients and physicians) and preliminary results of an ESM study on user experiences with commercial smartwatches aimed at increasing physical activity.
